Chapter Fifteen

Emily was so shocked she couldn’t even think of the right response. She made several attempts to say something, then finally gave up and sat down again, her breath coming out in a rush.

“I know,” Trevor said. He sat down on the side of the sofa closest to Emily’s chair. “Do you think that’s why Judy and Jerry were fighting? Maybe Mr. Bowers was leaning toward leaving the house to Jerry so it could stay in the Bowers family. Judy didn’t have any children, so leaving the house to Jerry, who could then leave it to his son, would have been the only way to keep the house in family hands.”

“Assuming Mr. Bowers even knew Jerry had a son. No one we’ve talked to has mentioned him, and Annie hasn’t reported finding anything in her research.”

“I said the same thing to the lawyer. He said Jerry had never told people he had a son—it would have been a big family scandal, I suppose—but he probably told his father about it in an effort to secure the house for himself. When the son showed up at the law office to claim the inheritance he thought he was owed, he was explicit about keeping it a secret until the estate was settled in his favor.”

“Except it wasn’t settled in his favor, and the house was sold. I wonder why?”

“Because the man was claiming to be Jerry’s son, but he was nowhere to be found in Jerry’s will. He wasn’t able to legally prove Jerry was his father, either.”

“Wow. No wonder Judy and Jerry were fighting all the time. It also helps explain why Jerry was more interested in simply owning the house, as opposed to Judy’s plans to profit off the land. She was going to build condos on that lot.”

Trevor laughed. “And my dad’s construction company probably would have built them, even though condos would stick out like a sore thumb in that neighborhood.”

“It sounds like this scandal goes beyond just two siblings who didn’t like each other. Apparently, Mr. Bowers was fairly well-respected around town. It’s a shame his kids didn’t take after him.”

“Now that I’ve shared my big news, I’m heading home.” Trevor stood and stretched.

“You’re welcome to stay for dinner,” Emily said, surprised Trevor was leaving so soon. “After all, you drove all the way out here.”

“Thanks, but I’ve actually got plans later tonight. Hopefully, there are no ghosts and no scandals at the movie theater! Let me know if you learn anything new this weekend.”

“I will. Thank you, Trevor. Have a nice night.” Emily walked Trevor out the front door, turning left on the front porch as he headed toward his car. She gazed at Hilltop Cemetery, now full of shadows as twilight deepened. It was still warm out, but it would likely be a nice temperature for ghost hunting later in the evening. Emily made a mental note to take a can of bug spray with her.

The evening passed swiftly. Trish stopped by not long after Trevor had left, armed with baked goods and the latest gossip.
